|a Paul Cézanne, French artist and Post-Impressionist painter, laid the foundations of the transition from the 19th century conception of artistic endeavor to a new and radically different world of art in the 20th century. This biography principally examines Cézanne's work in detail and draws on the observations of a wide range of historians and commentators. Cézanne's fascination with nature, his love-hate relationship with his birthplace, Aix-en-Provence--most specifically the nearby mountain, Sainte-Victoire, which he painted repeatedly throughout his life--his experiment with and abandonment of Parisian culture, and his troubled personal life are also touched upon.
