Description
Summary:Over the course of his career, Gregory Kondos has painted Greece, France, and the American Southwest, but he continues to find his greatest and most enduring inspiration in the richly varied landscape of California. The plains and hillsides he renders are both wild and cultivated; his settings include urban as well as undeveloped sites; his locales range from the supremely tranquil to the awe-inspiringly magnificant. In portraying such variety, he has moved between abstraction and representation, and yet his commitment to landscape has never wavered. His works simultaneously celebrate the land's inherent formal properties and the beauty and possibilities of paint itself. This publication, produced on the occasion of the artist's ninetieth birthday to accompany a retrospective exhibition, showcases more than fifty years of the artist's achievements in painting.
