520 |a The central question of this book is how did Japanese corporations and government institutions evolve during Japan's lost decade? To answer this question, the editors have put together a collection of contributions that focus primarily on technological enterprise and policy, the traditional basis for Japan's strong competitiveness. If we ask simply whether Japanese business has changed, the answer must be an unequivocal yes. There is no question that management practices in Japanese firms have developed in a myriad of ways during this lost decade, including executive strategies, corporate governance, human-resource management, and inter-corporate relationships. Clearly Japanese firms do have the power to change. Alternatively, if the question is refocused to ask whether Japanese firms, on top of making formal changes, have also changed in any substantive ways that might lead to a brighter future, it must be accepted that there is a decidedly less sanguine conclusion. This book will tell you why and what it means for the future of Japanese firms.
