In the 8th century it was destroyed in a series of earthquakes and, after being abandoned, disappeared from history for almost a thousand years. In 1806 a German archaeologist stumbled upon its ruins and since then various excavations have taken place. When this program was made, a large international restoration project was under way in north-western Jordan, with archaeological teams from various countries contributing to the overall effort. The film reports on the work involved, shows something of the remains of the Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Muslim cultures that are being uncovered and illustrates why Jerash is regarded as the best preserved Roman provincial city in the Middle East.
