For headteacher Kathryn Brooks, Mary was just what she was looking for, someone who was child friendly and who would use her own initiative. The school dinner ladies and staff sing her praises while Julie Morton, the school administrator, dreads the day she retires in a few years time. At Abbey Hill special school in Teeside retiring site manager Vic Brown, now working two days a week, has had a hand in selecting his replacement. Hear his views on what's required of a site manager as he reflects on his 25 years of service. Clare Devine, headteacher, describes him as the lynchpin of her team; he makes sure the school is a comfortable, safe and vibrant place to work in. Both heads agree that such an environment is stimulating and motivating for children.
