520 |a Visit Valentines High School in East London to see how mainstream English teachers work in partnership with EAL specialists to include early stage English Learners in lessons. The focus is on the assessment and evaluation of the students levels and progress. Observe a range of strategies in action such as pairing up EAL students with more able students, using assessment for learning techniques such as traffic lights, and questioning and encouraging group discussion to help all students regardless of level. At Valentines High School in East London over 69% of pupils have English as an Additional Language. It is a richly diverse school with 78% of students from ethnic minorities and over 50 languages spoken by the pupils. Valentines has high expectations of all pupils regardless of their ability in English, and staff and pupils celebrate diversity rather than look at upon it as a problem to be overcome.
