| Summary: | A frustrated footballer, Lars Vogt is an accomplished pianist & Although he may, at some time or other, have regretted not fulfilling his childhood dream (to be a pianist by night and a footballer by day), it is not to our displeasure that the keyboard took precedence over the football pitch. Almost 40 years old (he was born in 1970 in Germany), Lars Vogt followed a brilliant career which started with a meteoric ascent following a prize at the Leeds competition and a residence with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. He was the first pianist to initiate, in 2004, this type of relation Simon Rattle sought for the formation from Berlin. He is a solid pianist, without this being pejorative but rather with all the qualities it implies: complete knowledge of and respect for the score, great mastery of the keyboard and no showing off or extravagance. Recorded live on July 31, 2007 at the Verbier Festival, we hear him playing Schubert and Brahms. His highly original way of phrasing is wonderful in the Klavierstücke No. 1 and 3 D 946 by Schubert, then in the Third Sonata Op. 5 by Brahms, many of whose works he has recorded solo or with chamber orchestras (EMI). This Third Sonata, written by Brahms when he was 20, is the last piece for the piano he composed under this form. By giving us this haunting interpretation of this work, Lars Vogt shares with us the torments of a very young man plagued by Romantic dreams.
