Description
Summary: | Philip Miller's powerful choral work, based on testimonies from the TRC, comes to Cape Town with a unique staging by visual artist Gerhard Marx. Philip Miller is a leading South African composer whose music is simultaneously intellectually stimulating, moving and accessible. His Rewind: A Cantata for Voice, Tape and Testimony features soloists Sibongile Khumalo, Otto Maidi, Stéfan Louw and Nozuko Teto, with the Cape Town Opera Voice of the Nation chorus alongside the Heavenly Voices chorus, accompanied by a string octet led by Marian Lewin. The work interweaves operatic and traditional South African idioms with audio samples from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission hearings, endeavoring to portray in music the South African spirit as it emerged during a key period in our country's development. The staging by visual artist Gerhard Marx ingeniously incorporates the singers and musicians into visual projections made in collaboration with artist Maja Marx. This unique video installation adds haunting resonances to the text and the music.
