Summary:After 1993, many European countries have adopted railway reforms. The reform strategies included the vertical separation (infrastructure - services), the horizontal separation (freight - passenger), and the opening of the railway services market to the competition. The aim of this book is to identify the effect of the above reforms on the railway's output. Regression analysis of data from 27 European countries in the period 1995-2011 has shown positive influence of the horizontal separation, whereas no clear effect could be identified in the case of the vertical separation.
