|a Glen Yancey served in the Anti-Tank Company, 143rd Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division during the war. He was born and raised in Savannah, TN and played basketball and football in high school. He volunteered for service at the age of 17, but could not enter the Army until after he graduated. He was inducted at Camp Wheeler and went through basic training there. He left the US and landed in North Africa where his unit staged until they took part in landing at Salerno. His first major combat that he remembered was at the Rapido River in Italy. He also saw combat at Cassino, Anzio, invaded Southern France and upon entering Germany he was wounded sometime in late March or early April 1945 by shrapnel, possibly from an 88 round. The shrapnel lodged into this throat, damaging his vocal chords and lodged into his left shoulder area. He was taken to a field hospital, evacuated to England and then eventually brought back to the US where he was discharged. Yancey went to college at Union University in Jackson, TN on the GI Bill. He went on to get a Master's Degree in Education and enrolled in a PhD program, but was offered a coaching job in Birmingham. He coached for 37 years, mainly football.
