520 |a Just One World, for Marimba Duo and Soprano, was originally named '4132' and was commissioned by Momoko Kamiya in 2000. It originally only had one movement, this movement eventually becoming the third movement of 'Just One World'. Shortly after the piece was composed, Ms. Kamiya recorded the work with Hideki Ikegami (Marimba) and Asako Motojima (Soprano) on her album 'Marimba Virtuoso'. After the recording, I realised the potential of the combination of soprano and two marimbas and added the first and second movements several years later. The original version of '4132' only exists on the designated album. Later, Ms. Kamiya premiered the completed version of 'Just One World' in Japan with Satoshi Takeshima (Marimba) and Dana Hanchard (Soprano). Momoko Kamiya's own project, 'Pieces of Peace' was the inspiration for the texts. They are about our world today and how we are all connected by the digital revolution, globalisation and the idea that we only have one world whatever we do with it. The first movement deals with the idea of 'time' and how we are often the victims or the masters of it. There are times to act and there are times to be still and these are the choices that everyone must make - and possibly, we can take time to heal this world. The second movement, itself named 'Just One World', deals with the idea of love and power. I believe that most of us dream of a world in harmony with itself. If we do, then why are so many choices made in the name of power and not love? The third movement '4132', has only the text "four, one, three, two" in various combinations. It is a symbol for the digital race, technology and the times we live in. There are times in the music where the numbers almost sound like chants or mantras. This is the beauty and simplicity of our world ... There are also times in the music where the rhythm sounds like galloping horses surging relentlessly onwards. Could it be that mankind has opened a Pandora's box that he can't shut or get under control? Love Songs, for Soprano and Marimba Duo, are songs from the ballet, 'Book of Dreams' which is a work in progress. They were arranged here for this recording and represent a cross-over of pop, jazz and classical elements. Rhythms Of Life, for Marimba Solo with optional strings and percussion, was commissioned by Bogdan Bácanu. The main challenge of the piece was to write a solo work that would also function with an optional orchestra. Why this is a challenge, if not a completely novel idea is that you must imagine the concerto literature that we all know and love, and than try to hear it played without the orchestra. This is a major task for the soloist, who must play virtually without rest. The piece is rhapsodic in nature and contains a dominant theme which serves as the motive basis for the story. This theme goes through ten variations or scenes which represent situations in life that we may all be familiar with.
