Less well-known than it deserves, this three-act opera is exemplary of the Germanic lyric style that predominated at the beginning of the Romantic era--in contrast to the Italian bel canto popularized by the likes of Bellini, Donizetti, and Rossini--and that would later influence Wagnerian opera. Constantin Trinks masterfully conducts the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra in this spectacular staging by Christof Loy at the prestigious Theater an der Wien, site of so many legendary moments in the history of classical music. The score paints a vivid tableau of the legend of Euryanth of Savoy, interpreted with agility and grace by soprano Jacquelyn Wagner opposite impeccable tenor Norman Reinhardt in the role of Adolar of Nevers, Euryanthe's betrothed.
