Summary: | In 2019, the young French pianist Laurent Coulondre released the album Michel On My Mind, which will receive the French record of the year award from the Académie du Jazz. This recording commemorates the twentieth anniversary of the death of Michel Petrucciani. The concert given at the Ramatuelle Jazz Festival presents the repertoire of this album. One only needs to look at the dates to take measure of the tribute paid. Michel Petrucciani, born December 28, 1962, passed away on January 6, 1999; Laurent Coulondre was only ten years old at the time. This memory pushed him to want to restore, in his own way, the essence of the music of the one who became, through years of study, one of his models. Transcribing Petrucciani's subtle swing was not easy, as it was also necessary to know how to illustrate its intimate, lyrical, and often impetuous and playful dimensions. One can safely say that Laurent Coulondre, who has a subtle and delicate touch, succeeds in his re-readings where the aerial swing and the sense of melodic purity are very present. His own compositions like "Laura", dedicated to Michel Petrucciani's mother, and Michel on My Mind are perfectly in line with the spirit without being mimetic. Philippe Lesage.
