Description
Summary:While the story of Jenůfa--about a young woman plagued by hardship yet resilient in the face of adversity and social scorn--may seem small compared to some of the more grandiose works in the operatic cannon, its characters and their struggles for happiness are no less compelling, and Janáček's music never fails to tug at the heartstrings. In this Saturday Matinee Radio Broadcast from 2003, soprano Karita Mattila stars in the title role, the first of four of the composer's characters that she would inhabit on the Met stage. Alongside her, soprano Deborah Polaski is Jenůfa's imperious stepmother, the Kostelnička, and tenors Kim Begley and Christopher Ventris are the half-brothers hoping to win Jenůfa's affection. Maestro Vladimir Jurowski is on the podium to lead one of the most celebrated scores of the early-20th century.
