|a In his will, Arthur Rhodes gave his plantation and slaves to his wife Amelia for her life, with the land to be sold at her death and the proceeds and slaves to be divided between their son Edmund and the children of their deceased son William. Edmund became Arthur Rhodes's executor, and was also the administrator of William. After Amelia's death William's children mounted an action against Edmund for their shares of Arthur's property, and received [dollars] 197.24. Some of the slaves sold were bought by Ann Rea, the present plaintiff. William Rhodes's eldest son, William L Rhodes, subsequently sued Edmund for money accrued by the hiring out of Arthur's slaves; William L subsequently purchased seventeen of the slaves for [dollars] 144.35. The present bill alleged a fraudulent combination between members of the Rhodes family to defeat the interests of the plaintiff and prayed that the number of the slaves be discovered and half of them delivered to her. The Supreme Court found that by his actions Edmund Rhodes assented, as executor, to the various legacies given in his father's will, and that the plaintiff was entitled to half the slaves and their offspring, plus the profits of their hire since Amelia Rhodes's death. The costs of the case were to be paid by William L Rhodes.
