Description
Summary:The defendant, Jefferson, was indicted for raping a white woman, Elizabeth Rogers. Jefferson admitted that he had had sexual relations with her but claimed that it had been consensual. He offered to prove by witnesses that he and other slaves had had consensual sexual contact with Rogers on previous occasions, but this was rejected by the court. The court did accept, as evidence for the prosecution, a confession that Jefferson was alleged to have made after his arrest. He was found guilty and sentenced to death, and appealed to the Supreme Court. This found nothing in the judgment to which to take exception.
