|a The prisoner was indicted, with 2 others, Aaron and Gauzey, for the murder of their master, William Davenport. George appealed against his conviction. The Supreme Court reversed the verdict against him and called for a new trial because George's confessions had been extracted from him when he was fearful for his life and he had wanted to appease an angry crowd. The forced confessions of George and one of the other slaves were deemed to be inadmissible as evidence.
