There were indications that he had ravished her as she lay insensible. Evidence from various witnesses including David Beach, Thomas Garret, Wigginston and C B Brothers as to the mental state of the prisoner. Dr Parker suggested that the prisoner was insane and prone to heavy drinking. Others agreed that he was often seen to be drinking heavily or behaving violently. C B Brothers, his jailor, said that he was perfectly rational on the night that he was committed to jail, then out of his mind for several days, and then perfectly lucid again. The prisoner was found guilty of murder and this verdict was affirmed by the Supreme Court.
