The 24th section of the Black Code stated that intoxicating liquors could not be sold to a slave without the permission of their master and the seller was liable for any damages done to the master as a result of intoxication from the liquor. The judgment went against the defendant with the judge stating that the drowning was clearly the consequence of intoxication from the liquor supplied at his store and he must be liable.
