The Ballad of Narayama a Toei-Imamura production ; written and directed by Shohei Imamura.

A century ago, inhabitants from a remote mountian village lived in constant fear of starvation. Their lives were cruel, horrible, and at best, hopeless. To survive, a number of ruthless laws were passed. One of the most brutal-taking the elderly to the distant peak of Narayama to die.
