North Carolina, Superior Court, New Hanover : State v Peter (a slave), October 1855.

It was recorded that Robert and Charles Murphy were responsible for the failure of the slave Dick to appear in court as a witness. Peter was subsequently found not guilty of murder, but guilty of manslaughter. The prisoner was ordered to be branded and to receive 39 lashes.
